The Wahoo fishing has also been quite good off the western and northern ends of the north shore. A few boats have reported double digit catches and Wahoo weighing over 50 pounds. While our state record Wahoo is 133.2 pounds and was caught by Tom Brandt and Sky Mullins of Pohoiki on the island of Hawaii in 2000 the average fish is in the 30 pound range making any Wahoo over 50 pounds an awesome catch in Hawaii.
While typically the Mahi Mahi fishing in April is unbelievable in Haleiwa. This year has fallen a bit flat. BUT... the Mahi Mahi that are being caught are definitely on the large side. Bull's weighing over 50 pounds are a great battle and put on an aerial display that has to be seen to be believed. Capt. Dave on the Foxy Lady even landed a cow Mahi Mahi that weighed over 40 pounds. The cows typically don't get as big as the bulls making that one heck of a nice fish.
Things should keep improving as we move further towards summer and it historic run of big fish. Let's all hope that this years fishing in Haleiwa is just as good if not better than the past few year. As you can see from our fishing photo galleries from 2006 and 2007 north shore Oahu fishing is amazing in the summer!
Aloha,
Capt. Jesse
